Unlearning Is the Hardest Part
November 10, 2025
Because “that’s just how I was raised” isn’t a life sentence.
We don’t talk enough about the grief that comes with growth.
Especially when that growth means letting go of:
-
What Ma taught you to put on your plate
-
What your church said was “fine in moderation”
-
What your culture made sacred (even if it made you sick)
See, we think healing is just about learning new things.
But the real work?
It’s unlearning what no longer serves you.
Why It’s Hard
Because it worked once.
That corner store honey bun got you through 9th grade heartbreak.
That “soul food” plate reminded you of Sunday joy.
That sweet tea? It was Ma’s love in a glass.
Those rainy weekends that was filled with a Grand Slam/All-Star Brunch.
But now?
Your body’s inflamed.
Your energy is crashing.
Your mind’s at war with your memories.
And the war ain’t just about food. It’s about identity.
This Week, Give Yourself Grace
You are not betraying your roots by breaking bad patterns.
You are honoring your lineage by refusing to pass pain down.
And yes—some folks will say:
“You doing too much.”
“I ate this all my life and I’m fine.”
“One little bite won’t hurt.”
But their opinions don’t have to become your habits.
Quick Reflection:
What’s one food, phrase, or family norm you know is outdated—but you still carry it?
📝 Write it down.
🔁 Flip it into a new affirmation.
💚 Practice your evolution—without the guilt.
Because the goal isn’t just to eat better. It’s to live freer.
You’re not just unlearning habits.
You’re unlearning limits.
