Inherited Values, Upgraded Choices
October 09, 2025
Honoring your roots without repeating the cycle
You are not your grandma’s greens.
You are not your uncle’s hot sauce obsession.
You are not your cousin’s “we’ve always eaten this way” lecture.
You are YOU. And you’re allowed to evolve.
A lot of what we eat isn’t just about hunger — it’s about heritage. The Sunday spreads. The funeral repasts. The family cookouts where love is poured into pots that might also be pouring high blood pressure and diabetes into our lineage.
And yet, we still pull up a chair.
Because rejecting the food sometimes feels like rejecting the family.
Like you’re saying, “Y’all were wrong.”
And nobody wants to be that person.
Truth?
You can honor your ancestors without inheriting their diseases.
You can cook collards without pork.
You can break bread without breaking your body.
Choosing differently doesn’t mean you’re disloyal.
It means you’re doing what they couldn’t — or didn’t know how to.
And that… is love too.
Let’s Reframe This:
Instead of:
“This is how I was raised.”
Try:
“This is what I was taught… but I get to choose what I keep.”
Instead of:
“We’ve always eaten this way.”
Try:
“We didn’t always have the knowledge I have now.”
Instead of:
“My grandma lived to 98 eating bacon and grits.”
Try:
“Longevity isn’t the only goal. How she felt for those 98 years matters too.”
This Week’s Reflection:
What food traditions do you want to carry forward — and which ones do you lovingly leave behind?
Your ancestors survived so you could thrive.
So thrive. Loudly. Healthfully. On purpose.
You are the upgrade.
Honor them by choosing better.
