The Popcorn Experiment

July 27, 2026

Imagine this...

You're sitting in a movie theater.
The lights go down.
The previews begin.

You reach into your popcorn.

Nothing unusual, right?

Now imagine I tell you...

The popcorn is stale.

Not just a little stale.

Like, several days old stale.

You take a bite.

"Yeah...this isn't very good."

And yet...

You keep eating.

Why?

The Experiment

Researchers invited people to watch a movie.

As a thank-you for participating, each person was given a free bucket of popcorn.

There was just one catch...

The popcorn was five days old.

From behind a two-way mirror, the researchers watched what happened next.

One by one...

People reached into their buckets.

They popped the first handful into their mouths.

And almost immediately...

😖 Their faces twisted in disgust.

It was stale.

Some participants immediately set their buckets down as if to say,

"Nope... I'm not eating this."

But then something fascinating happened.

Within about ten minutes...

Many of those same people picked their buckets back up.

They reached in again.

And again.

And again.

By the end of the movie...

Many had eaten most of the popcorn.

Some finished the entire bucket.

..and it's not that the popcorn suddenly tasted better.

or even that they became hungry....because oh, I forgot to mention. The researchers just treated them to a 5-course meal just before the movie.

So, why?

The popcorn never changed.

Their behavior didn't either.

Let's THINK...

Were they hungry?

Probably not.

Did they suddenly start liking stale popcorn?

Definitely not.

So why did they keep eating?

Because the movie had become part of the eating experience.

The brain had learned:

🎬 Movie = Popcorn.

It wasn't responding to hunger.

It was responding to a cue.

You Have Cues Too

Maybe yours isn't popcorn.

Maybe it's...

📺 Netflix.

🏈 Football.

🚗 Driving.

📱 Scrolling social media.

📚 Studying.

💻 Sitting at your desk.

☎️ Talking on the phone.

For many people, these activities quietly whisper:

"Something's missing..."

And without thinking...

your hand reaches for food.

Here's Today's Experiment

Don't change what you eat.

Just notice...

What activity automatically makes you want to eat?

The movie had quietly taken over.

Every scene reminded your brain,

"This is what we do."

Our brains can sometimes pair Movies = Popcorn together.

So, for one week...

Become the scientist.

Observe.

Don't judge.

Just notice.

Because awareness always comes before change.

Snack on THIS

Sometimes the food ain't the habit.

The activity is.

Change the cue...

and you may change the craving.
